Akpata’s legal journey commenced under the mentorship of Dr. Mudiaga Odje, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), OFR, in Delta State. In 1996, he relocated to Lagos, where he partnered with his cousin to establish the renowned law firm, Templars. Under his leadership, Templars has flourished into one of Nigeria’s largest law firms, boasting a team of over 100 lawyers, including two Senior Advocates of Nigeria.
Akpata’s prominence soared in July 2020 when he clinched a landslide victory to become the 30th President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), a prestigious professional organization boasting nearly 200,000 members and 128 branches nationwide. Notably, he was the first non-Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to hold this esteemed position after acquiring a total of 9,891 votes of the total 18,25 6 ballots cast, defeating his closest rival Babatunde Ajibade (SAN) who polled 4,328 votes, and Dele Adesina (SAN) who polled 3,982 votes.
